Duplicato is a serial of 10 paintings by Sebastian Bieniek, painted 2015.
The paintings are based on the "Doublefaced" photogaphs. When started to paint Sebastian Bieniek portray the photographs, later he painted what he felt has to be painted. In this way the pantings have a connection to the photography and at the same time are something new.
This is a manner in which Sebastian Bieniek often works. 1997, in the second year of his art study in Braunschweig, he portayed one month every day a painting.
Each portrait was very different, because each of them had after a certain time it's own rythm and rules, so the artist to follow them and to make something new.
Each time Sebastian Bieniek paints he believes that the situation is different, that the rythm changed so something different has to grow out of it. Sebastian Bieniek does not believe in the repetition. In his opinion repetition is not possible, because even when you repeat the same words, always also the meaning is changed. "OK, OK" for example has a different meaning that "OK". A single look in the eyes of somebody means something diffent than to look twice into somebody's eyes.
Beside of this Sebastian Bieniek likes to try out his oeuvre in diffent media. To change the media means similar to the change of time (repetition) the change of rythm. Every medium has it's own rules. This is one of the reasons why Sebastian Bieniek is making paintings, photographs, videos and also writing. He's an artist who is more interested in finding and understanding the rythm of the content and medium than to subordinate it to his own rythm, which would mean an a way a constant style.
